Going to India , Server at long term halt

As you might be knowing, I am going to India at 25th may 2008.

So wish me good luck.

And I am putting my server to the longest offline halt ever. (for good and convenience of course)

It can come back only after a few weeks or some months , depending upon the conditions I face in India.

I project the site can , may , emerge somewhere in 2009 or in the begenning of 2009.

Ultimate ways to get past blocked websites

Sometimes, some firewall or security system or even the ISP can block certain websites for certain reasons and if you really want to get past those blocks , you can try some of the methods below that may work and is your ultimate choice :-

1. Proxy Server

Use a proxy server to access restricted sites. A proxy server (or proxies) is a normal computer that hides the identity of computers on its network from the Internet. Which means that only the address of the proxy server is visible to the world and not of those computers that are using it to browse the Internet. Just visit the proxy server website with your Web browser and enter a URL (website address) in the form provided. But only some proxies can work as they have to be anonymous usually and not transparent. Even at times , some websites dont allow proxies enabled in your network and so this method cannot always work.

To get one proxy, you need to go to a proxy list site. For that, search the google using the google search at the top of this blog using keywords "free list of proxy" etc

Then , you need to identify which browser you are using. For Internet Explorer , go to tools > Internet Options > "connections" tab > LAN settings > Checkbox 'use a proxy server' and enter in the details of proxy address you got from a site.

In firefox browser, go to Tools menu > Options > "Advanced" > Network tab > Settings..

Alternatively there are several softwares available for using proxies. Just search on google to get an endless list. Here are my favourite ones. They are all Free!
Free Proxyway anonymous surfing 1.9
Proxy Server List Hunter 1.78

The easiest method of using proxies is to visit hidemyass.com and enter a website there and surf using it. This will automatically and completely hide your IP and you can view any blocked website. While using this, your IP is muffled as "IP from USA". Also to note, there can be some performance issues when using proxies and even in hidemyass.com service.

2. Convert URL to IP

You can use this service called Web Server IP Checker to get the IP of the server on which your site is hosted, the one you want to visit using proxy.Once the IP is in your hand type http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ in your browser to visit the blocked site, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the web server and thats it.You can also get the IP of the webserver by using Command Prompt. Just go to Run and type ‘cmd’ and press OK. Now type “ping http://www.website.com/” without quotes and you will get the IP.
Note : A very few websites (usually small ones) run on Dynamic IP and in such situations , this method cannot be very effective since their website IP gets changed often. But such websites are few and big commercial websites always have static IP (fixed IP)

3. Convert IP to Decimal

If the URL to IP trick fails over some networks this is the trick you are looking for Just get the IP of the site from Web Server IP Checker and go to RedRoster. Enter the IP in the IP address field and hit calculate. You will get an address in Decimal Field. Take this and paste in your browser as http://xxxxxxxx/, where xxxxxxxx is your decimal converted IP and it shall work.

4. Google cache method

If all of the above does not seem to work or if you need some other quick and fast way of getting into a blocked site, you can use the Google's cache. Simply type in the website in google search and if the website shows in the results list, simply click on the "cached page" instead on the link. This will open the site from the google's saved ie. cached database.
Note : However, there are a lot of limitations in this method. First, only popular pages are found in google as they are crawled by google bots more often. Second, the cached page cannot reveal some pictures on the site or the website will not be viewed more like actually it has to be. Third , the cached page may not be an updated version of the webpage and can be outdated. Finally, the cached page will not be able to view any dynamic content or complex scripts in site. Such examples include videos , flash games on the website etc.

So there you go! A complete list of what you can do if you really need to get inside websites blocked by ISP or some administrative security on the local host side.
